    • A Few Old Grocery Stores

    • Every once in awhile, some old-timer will comment about how many grocery stores there used to be in Chillicothe. Gene Carlton, of Chillicothe, whose grandfather was in the grocery business at 708 Locust, drove around town recently to see how many he could come up with. He says that the list isn’t complete, and some may have the name or address off a bit, but they were here. Many of them were here back into the 1920s and later than the 1950s, but mainly, the list is from the 1930s, 1940s and early 1950s. Carlton’s grandfather was in the grocery business when the first loaves of sliced bread were sold in 1928. The photos supplied were provided by members of the public as well as ones on file at the Constitution-Tribune. These photos were published in the March 2012 edition of MyChilliMo.
