ST. JOSEPH — Chillicothe High School’s Lady Hornets soccer team had a strong outing against the St. Joseph Benton Lady Cardinals yesterday, registering a 3-1 win.
The victory squared the Lady Hornets’ season record at 2-2 heading into a match at Kansas City Lutheran today.
According to CHS head coach?Lance Harvey, the Lady Hornets opened up the scoring in the ninth minute as junior forward Sarah Hussey followed a mishandled ball by Lady Cardinals goalkeeper Keelie Arbuckle and pushed it into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
Chillicothe took advantage of a strong tailwind and put together several scoring opportunities which finally culminated in a goal by freshman forward Lindy Saunders, her third of the season, at the 27-minute mark, making it 2-0,?CHS.
Saunders struck again three minutes later as she ran onto a beautiful pass out of the midfield, settled the ball, and hit a hard shot past the frozen BHS ’keeper, bumping the?Lady?Hornets’ margin to 3-0.
The CHS girls continued pressuring the rest of the half, but were not able to score again as the half expired.
The second half was a different story as Benton, with the wind now at its back and aided by the return of suspended forward Savannah Domann,
sent several long, dangerous passes into the Chillicothe penalty area.
