EXCELSIOR SPRINGS — Chillicothe High School’s Lady Hornets soccer team came home with the third-place trophy from the Excelsior Springs tournament this weekend.
The hardware came courtesy of a 1-0 victory over North Kansas City on Saturday afternoon with senior Kylie Barton netting the match’s only goal and sophomore goalkeeper Brooke Jettleson notching her second shutout of 2012.
Regrouping after a 10-0 semifinals loss to eventual tournament champ Liberty: North on Friday, the Lady Hornets put together one of their best defensive games of the season against NKC, in the view of head coach?Lance Harvey and assistant Mark?Dujmovic.
The CHS booters created several scoring opportunities in the first half, Harvey reports, but were unable to finish at the net until the 25th minute when senior forward Barton settled the ball about 18 yards from the goal and fired a hard shot into the right half of the netting. It was her second goal of the season.
Chillicothe played into a stiff wind in the second half and would not be able to add to its lead, but maintained it against NKC’s Lady Hornets on the strength of defenders Hope Peters, Cyrsten Lollar, Carley Anderson, and Ashiah St. Onge and Jettleson, the CHS coach declared.
