  • SUMNER — The Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge will offer its second “1st Friday” program of 2012 next Friday, May 4, featuring, as always, a free hot dog supper, tower tours and hayrides, plus several added attractions.
Unveiled for the first time will be a new “stream box,” a 384-square-feet sand box with water flowing through it.
In the “stream box,” youngsters will be able to perform numerous hands-on activities teaching them how water interacts and influences the landscape as well as how what we do on the landscape impacts others.
Visitors should plan to stop by the Visitor Center to learn about habitats found at Swan Lake and the best angling methods for a successful day of fishing on Silver Lake. Canoes will be available for anyone wanting to go canoeing and an archery range will be set up with bows and arrows provided.
At 6 p.m., in the new outdoor amphitheatre, attendees can enjoy your supper while listening to the talented family bluegrass band, Currycorn, to be followed at 7:30 p.m. by the feature program, “Animal Wonders”, where visitors will join Dan Cowell and his critters. This program focuses on wetlands, pollution and exotic wildlife.
First Friday activities will start at 5 p.m. and run until dark.
