SMITHVILLE — Cutting it as close as they could have, the 2012 Chillicothe High School golf Hornets did advance someone to the Class 3 sectional tournament from yesterday’s District 8 tourney.
Senior No. 2 player Jake Mathew became the first Hornets golfer ever to qualify for sectional play with an 18-hole score of 83 on the par-72 Outlaw course at the Paradise Pointe?Golf Complex at Smithville. The Missouri?State High School Activities Association only instituted the current district-sectional-state sequencing format a couple of years ago. Prior to that, players qualified for state directly from the district tournament.
Mathew’s 83, which secured the final sectional spot for an individual, was six strokes better than the average he took into play.
“Jake had a good day and his putting was the strong phase of his game today,” assessed CHS coach?Vickie Garrett. “Jake is peaking at the right time of the season and hopefully he can improve on his score next week and get to go to state.”
