EXCELSIOR SPRINGS — Senior Jake Mathew yesterday came within a whisker of being Chillicothe High School’s first qualifier for the boys’ state golf tournament since Logan?Gilli-land tied for 10th place at  state four years ago.
Mathew shot an 85 for the 18 holes played at the Excelsior Springs Golf Course, tying him for 13th place among players not on the two teams which earned spots in the upcoming state tourney’s team competition. Had he been able to cut one single swing off his round, an 84 would have tied him for 10th-best non-team individual, a finish which would have qualified him for state play.
“Jake played one of his best rounds this season,”?Chillicothe coach?Vickie Garrett commented.  “I am proud and pleased with his efforts.”
