  • For the first time ever, Chillicothe High School's soccer Lady Hornets have experienced a postseason victory.
The Lady Hornets, in their sixth year of existence, defeated St. Joseph: Benton a fourth time in 2012 Saturday, this time by a 4-2 count.
By doing so, they advanced to Tuesday's championship match of the 4-team Class 2 District 16 tournament, where they'll face fellow Midland Empire Conference member Savannah.
Having edged Benton twice by one goal — in  overtime once — and once by a 3-1 margin, the Lady Hornets matched the larger spread in the action at Lafayette's Alumni Stadium.  No match details had been reported at the time of this story's posting Saturday night.
By virtue of their seventh win in 19 matches this season, the Chillicothe girls — seeded second in the small field — move on to face the lowest seed, Savannah, for the district title at 5 p.m. Tuesday.  Savannah nudged aside top-seeded host Lafayette 2-1 Saturday.
The regular season's only meeting between the District 16 finalists came at Savannah  May 3.  Chillicothe lost that match 2-1 in a second round of penalty-kicks shootout.  After each team scored once in regulation time, the Lady Hornets tying the contest early in the second half on Kylie Barton's long shot.  Following two scoreless overtime periods, each team converted three of five penalty kicks in the first shootout segment, forcing another. Savannah then scored three more times, while Chillicothe, which lost starting goalkeeper Cyrsten Lollar to a season-ending injury during the match, hit only one of four.
Savannah defeated Chillicothe in the first round of district play last year.
