RICHMOND — Chillicothe High?School’s Lady?Hornets and Hornets both will take eight entries to this coming Saturday’s state-qualifying sectional track-and-field meet at Excelsior Springs as a result of solid, typical performances in this past Saturday’s Class 3 District 8 meet at Richmond.
The district meet finished on a positive note for the Hornets, thanks to a herculean performance by a senior.
In the boys’ 1,600-meters (4x400) relay, the last race of the day, Hornets head coach?Bill?Shaffer recounted, “Our team was nearly in last place when Austin Busse recieved the baton for the anchor leg.
“Austin made up the ground and sandwiched between two runners from Kansas City: East and St. Joseph: Benton with 70 meters to go and our relay team finished in third place” in a time of 3:38.83.
Preceding Busse on that unit were Corey?Saville,?David Hershberger, and Walker Thomas.
The Hornets also will send a quartet to run in the 800 relay at sectional after Busse, Thomas, DeEll Midgyett, and Zach?Alperin combined to finish fourth at district in 1:34.36.
Chillicothe’s girls also will send multiple relay teams to the sectional competition, from which any top-four finishers will earn the chance to compete in the state meet May 25-26.
The Lady?Hornets, in fact, will take all four of their relay groups to Excelsior Springs, two as district champions.
The 400-meters group of Erin?Gilliland, Madison?Williams, Mackenzie Barnett, and Olivia Hayes went once around to the dealer in 51.09 seconds to win after the first three had been joined by Jordyn?Circo to take first in the 800 relay in 1:48.39.
The Lady?Hornets’ 1,600- and 3,200-meters relay units each settled for fourth places.
Aside from the relays, the Lady?Hornets have sectional qualifiers in four events – including 300-meters low hurdles champion Gilliland, and the Hornets have five other qualifiers in three other events, led by junior thrower Alec Whiteside, who took the boys’ shot put and was second in the discus.
Senior Spencer Hart posted a pair of fourths in those boys’ weight-throwing events. Junior high hurdler?Hershberger took fourth, too, as did senior Broc Graves in the 1,600.
Rounding out the Lady?Hornets’ list are Gilliland in the high hurdles, Lexi?Snyder in the triple jump, Paige Peters in the shot put. Snyder and Gilliland were runnersup in those events and Peters third.
Powered by the sectional-qualifying efforts and numerous others which earned team points, if not advancement, Chillicothe’s girls finished second in the district meet team standings with 89 points and the boys tied for third with 70.
