EXCELSIOR SPRINGS — Chillicothe High School junior Wade Dietz on Saturday earned a spot in Class 1 high school boys' state-qualifying sectional singles competition tomorrow by placing second in the District 15 tournament at Excelsior Springs.
After a semifinals upset victory, a spent Dietz finished second to Joe Ibarra of Kansas City: St. Pius X in singles. Ibarra won their title match in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. The SPX Warrior had defeated Dietz 6-2, 6-2 last Monday when Chillicothe defeated St. Pius X
5-1 in team district play in Chillicothe.
“Our goals from the beginning of the season were to win the (Midland Empire Conference team title) and send a player to sectionals and it feels good to accomplish these goals,” Hornets head coach Aaron Douglas reacted.
As District 15 runnerup, Dietz will be paired against District 16 champion Brock Baade of Savannah in the sectional. The winner of that match – which is due to be played at 4 p.m. tomorrow at St. Joseph’s Noyes Tennis Center – will earn one of the 16 state-tournament berths. The individuals singles and doubles state tournaments will be played at Springfield May 25-26.
“This is a huge honor,” the CHS coach said of Dietz’s opportunity.
CHS’ other entries in the non-team district singles and doubles competition Saturday produced only one match victory between them, thereby concluding their 2012 seasons.
