  • The 28th Annual Chautauqua in the Park will be held September 8-9, 2012 at Simpson Park in Chillicothe, Missouri. This annual event, sponsored by the Chillicothe Area Chamber of Commerce and the Chillicothe Area Arts Council, and presented by Hedrick Medical Center, has a wide variety of entertainment, activities, artists, crafts and food.
Lindy Chapman, Chillicothe Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director reminds, "We encourage anyone who still wants to have a booth to call our office soon. There are still spaces available." Many different artists and crafters are already signed up to showcase and sell their products to the estimated 6,000 people who attend Chautauqua each year from a multi-state area.
Wood crafts, clothing, accessories, jewelry, photography, ceramics/pottery, painting and many other types of fine arts and crafts are all represented throughout the festival. Vendors come from throughout Missouri and the Midwest to sell their items at the Chautauqua. The Traditional Arts area showcases the talents of spinners, weavers, broom makers and many others who take a craft back to its roots, and demonstrate at the festival.
"We have over 100 craft, food and children's booths already registered – several more than at this time in the last few years. Of course, we will also have the popular Traditional Arts area again, with demonstrators and vendors including a new 'Sheep to Shawl' exhibit and demonstration." stated Chapman.
The Chillicothe Area Arts Council has planned a schedule of diverse entertainment throughout the two-day event. Chautauqua will again feature the traditional bluegrass and country bands, as well as gospel music on Sunday morning. On Saturday at 11:30, a special interactive drumming program for kids will be presented. Called "Drum Safari", the audience meets different African animals represented in music, with their names set to rhythm. Then it's time for singing and dancing and DRUMMING—a great time for kids and their families. This program is presented by Brandon Draper of Kansas City's Jiggle Jam fame!
There will also be many activities for kids during the festival, especially in the Children's Area, including a petting zoo, face painting, a preschool activities tent and inflatable games.
A wide variety of food will be available both in the food court and throughout the park on the trails. Many of the organizations that sell food at the Chautauqua are non-profit groups in the Chillicothe area that raise money to support charitable efforts throughout the year.
Call the Chillicothe Area Chamber at 660-646-4050 to request a booth application or to reserve your space. The application can also be found online at www.chillicothemo.com under "Event Registration."
