  • Lois Juanita Cox Firmin, a Chillicothe resident died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, at Morningside Center, under the care of the Center and St. Luke's Hospice.
    Juanita was born Feb. 15, 1921, in Grundy County, Mo., to Joseph Oscar and Nellie Roberts Cox. Later that year, they moved to Chillicothe, where she spent her entire childhood. She married Joel Firmin in 1948, in Kansas City, Mo. He preceded her in death in 2007.
    She was a graduate of Chillicothe High School, attended the University of Denver for one year, and the Chillicothe Business College, graduating in 1941. She then went to Washington, D.C., where she worked for the government during World War II. Later she held secretarial positions in Rochester, N.Y. and Fullerton, Calif.
    After she and Joel married, the couple resided on a farm near Weston, Mo., and for 20 years they bred and showed Polled Hereford Cattle in cooperation with the University of Missouri Agriculture School, including initiating Performance Testing in Monterey, Mexico, and showing the top indexing bull at the University Show and Sale. She was also a Caseworker in Platte County, and held many other positions in the area. They retired and sold their farm and moved to Chillicothe in 1998, to be near family.
    She was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church, Daughters of the King, Olive Prindle Chapter DAR, and Grand River Historical Society and Museum. She spent many hours doing family history research for her family and others.
    She is survived by seven nieces and nephews, including Betty Lemon and Barbara Cox of Chillicothe.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and their only child, David; brothers, Lloyd, Tom, Guy, Claude, Glen, and Clifford; and sisters Fay Sherrow and Edith Kaufmann.
    In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Grace Episcopal Church. They may be left at the funeral home or mailed to Heritage Funeral Home, 3141 N. Washington, Chillicothe, MO 64601. Online condolences may be left at www.heritage-becausewecare.com.
    Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, at Heritage Funeral Home, in Chillicothe. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, at Sugar Creek Cemetery, Rushville Mo. (Highway 116 & Hwy M).
    Arrangements are under the direction of Heritage Funeral Home, Chillicothe, Mo.
