  • Site work for the new Hedrick Medical Center is in full gear with earth moving equipment working the ground at the southeast corner of U.S. Highway 65 and Mohawk Road. Project contractors gave a progress report during a workshop meeting with the Chillicothe City Council Monday evening at City Hall. The target date for substantial completion of the project remains no later than the end of November 2013, with occupancy to take place in early 2014. Materials testing contract negotiations have begun, and the rough grading is nearly complete. Looking ahead, work on storm drainage and utilities will begin soon. Bids for the balance of the work are due tomorrow (Thursday). Travis Pigott, of Adams, which is representing the city on the project, stated that there is a great deal of interest from local bidders. It was noted that once construction shifts into high gear, there will be more than 100 people on the site per day. Pigott said that the overall project is slightly ahead of schedule. Foundation work is expected to start before the end of the month with the arrival of structural steel by Monday, and footings are expected to be poured within the coming weeks. Because of expansive clay conditions beneath where the building will be constructed, Pigott told the council that a screening process was used to ensure a more suitable foundation base. The process involves over-excavating the site and backfilling with a gravel mixture 18 inches deep. He said that this process is a standard practice. Hedrick Medical Center is owned by the city of Chillicothe and has been leased to Saint Luke's Health system since 2003. Total cost is $41 million, including land, equipment, and construction of the new hospital facility and adjacent medical office building. The new facility is designed by Hoefer Wysocki Architects, LLC. The construction company is J.E. Dunn.
