  • Coalition to host “Mental Health First Aid” classes in November

  • The Coalition for Cultural Awareness invites the public to participate in their upcoming training program, entitled "Mental Health First Aid: Show Me How!", which will take place this upcoming November.
    The 12-hour certification course is taught by Preferred Family Healthcare Prevention Specialist Gary Hildebrand, and holds te purpose of helping communities to better understand mental illness and ways in which to respond to psychiatric emergencies.
    Items taught during the training course will include:
    • The potential risk factors and warning signs for a range of mental health problems, including depression, anxiety/trauma, psychosis, eating disorders, substance use disorders, and self-injury;
    • An understanding of the prevalence of various mental health disorders in the U.S., and the need for reduced stigma in communities regarding such;
    • A five-step action plan encompassing the skills, resources and knowledge to assess the situation, to select and implement appropriate interventions, and to help the individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional care;
    • And the evidence-based professional, peer, social, and self-help resources available to help someone with a mental health problem.
    There will be a $25 charge for attending this training, which will cover the cost of materials. Lunch will be served. Payment may be made at training, or you may send a check or money order to: Coalition for Cultural Awareness, P.O. Box 1221, Chillicothe, MO 64601.

    Classes will be held at the Mildred Litton Building, at the Litton Agri-Science Learning Center, 10856 LIV 235, Hwy. 190, Chillicothe.
    Dates and times are as follows: Wednesday, November 14, 2012 — 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.; Thursday, November 15, 2012 — 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
