  • The St. Columban Octoberfest is entering its 39th year and promoters anticipate this year's event to be bigger than ever. Octoberfest is this Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 29-30, on the church grounds on Trenton Street between JFK and 10th Streets.
This year, the event will begin with a traditional German dinner at 6 p.m. on Saturday. Live entertainment will follow by a popular regional band called the Curtis Stroud Band. The band plays country and rock favorites and are happy to take requests. Dancing, refreshments, fellowship and fun will take place until 11 p.m.
On Sunday, from noon until 4 p.m., Octoberfest continues with a traditional fall festival on the church grounds. All the usual favorites will be on hand.
Festival food, including brats, burgers, hotdogs, nachos, walking tacos, funnel cakes and more will be available for purchase, as well as cake and ice cream for dessert. The country store will be selling treats, and there also will be opportunities to win a cake in a cake walk.
A baby contest will take place in the school cafeteria at 1 p.m.
Live entertainment will play all afternoon Sunday, starting with the Bonderer Band, and concluding with The Waterloo German Band from Waterloo, Iowa.
"Fun for the family includes plenty of games for the kids," said event spokeswoman Amy Supple. "Take a ride, go fishing, play the duck pond or the balloon pop."
"And, for even more fun, enjoy our inflatable bounce houses, obstacle course, super start shootout and rock climbing wall," she said.
