  • Football Spartans to battle nemesis No. 5 ranked Hannibal

  • The North Central Missouri Conference football title most likely is on the line Friday when Moberly (5-1, 3-0 NCMC) plays at Class 4 fifth-ranked Hannibal (6-0, 4-0 NCMC). The game also weighs heavily on the district playoff seeding that will take place in a couple of weeks between the two schools as the Pirates currently is the top-seed and the Spartans are fourth.

  • The Moberly Spartans are enjoying a 5-game winning streak while using some sound, fundamental team discipline to find success this football season so far.
Moberly’s defense has not surrendered more than a pair of touchdowns during any game this campaign, and following the school’s 41-12 homecoming win against Marshall, the Spartans are putting much focus on Week’s 7 opponent Hannibal when Moberly serves as the Pirates homecoming opponent on Friday night.
The Pirates (6-0, 4-0 NCMC) are ranked fifth in the latest Class 4  high school football poll, and Hannibal has been a North Central Missouri Conference nemesis of the Spartans.
Moberly’s football team has lost 17 of the recent 18 meetings between the two schools.
During the Spartans’ magical 2007 football season when the team went 11-1 while reaching the Class 3 state quarterfinals, Moberly defeated Hannibal 39-22.
After finishing off Fulton by a 42-0 margin last week, Hannibal has outscored their 2012 opponents by an average score of about 40-9.
Against Fulton in Week 6, Hannibal scored four times in the opening quarter, including an 84-yard TD run by quarterback Dalton Powell.
The senior signal caller along with running back Mitch Nichols are both averaging nearly 100 rushing yards per game this season, and Hannibal has been rotating for other ball carriers into the game who have rumbled at least 25 yards apiece as well.
Coach Mark St. Clair’s squad also is on top of the District 6 standings  while Moberly is fourth with three weeks left before seedings are established for the district playoffs.
