  • CHILLICOTHE » After finishing 1-2 in last week's district tournament individuals play, Chillicothe High School sophomores Sydnie Whiteside and Ali Stephens are one match win away from advancing to the Class 1 state tournament singles competition Oct. 19-20, matches they can win on their home courts Monday (Oct. 10).
Chillicothe's Daryl Danner Memorial Park courts will be the site for individuals sectional matches in singles and doubles Monday at 3 p.m. Fans are welcome and invited to view the action at no charge. There is some, but not a lot of seating available.
For all of Monday's competitors, it's do or die on a personal level. Win and you go to state; lose and your season is complete. Some of the competitors may be on teams which advance to state for team competition.
For Whiteside, advancing to state is not a foregone conclusion, but she not only brings an undefeated record for the 2012 season into Monday's play, but, as District 16 champion, will meet District 15 runner-up Erica McDonald of Kansas City: St. Pius X in the sectional match. McDonald lost to Cami Pendleton of St. Joseph: Benton 1-6, 1-6 in the District 15 finals last Thursday and Pendleton has lost all three of her matches against Whiteside this season, the first two decisively and the most recent in a 3-set thriller for the Midland Empire Conference Tournament title.
Stephens, as District 16 runner-up, will draw 2-time district champ Pendleton Monday. They have played once during the season, with Pendleton winning 7-6(4), 6-2 in the semifinals of the MEC tournament.
While the Chillicothe twosome are involved in singles play, Trenton sisters Jaci and Jessica Tracy, the District 16 champs, will face District 15 runner-up Sarah Lanning and Maggie Withrow of KC: St. Pius X for a state doubles berth.
The other doubles match will be District 15 champs Emily Nissen and Elena Ibarra, also of St. Pius X, against Maryville's Mara Veasey and Emily Schreck.
