  • City to consider election change

    • email print
  • Changes are taking place for the next municipal election cycle, and Chillicothe City Council members will review possible alternatives when they gather for their regular semimonthly meeting tonight (Monday). The regular meeting starts at 6:30 p.m., and will be preceded by a 5:30 p.m. meeting, at which time the council will be updated on progress of the new Hedrick Medical Center.
The city ordinances currently provide for a primary election and a general election: the primary election on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in February, and the general election on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in April.
However, a state statute that became effective Aug. 28, 2012, eliminates the election day in February except for bond elections.
The city now has several options to consider:
The city may eliminate the primary election and just hold a general election, with the person receiving the most votes being declared the winner.
The city could also continue with a primary election, but change the election dates. The alternatives are: 1) hold the primary in November and the general election in April; 2) hold the primary in April and the general election in August; 3) hold the primary in August and the general in November.
By continuing with a primary election, under option "1", it is too late this year to give proper time for filing and notices; by implementing options "2" or "3," the city would have to pick up all the cost of the election in August normally.
No decision regarding the election is expected at tonight's meeting.
Other items on the council's regular meeting agenda call for recommendations of appointments to the Parks and Recreation Board and the Airport Board, and a discussion and ordinance accepting certain streets within Lakeview Estates.
The council will also consider bids for towing services.
An executive session may follow the regular council meeting.
