  • The big band sound of music greats like Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Harry James, Count Basie, the Dorsey Brothers and others will be featured in a 3 p.m. concert on Sunday, Nov. 4, at Gary Dickinson Performing Arts Center in Chillicothe, when the University of Central Missouri Faculty-Alumni Big Band comes to Chillicothe to perform.
The performance is part of the 2012-13 Chillicothe Arts Council's arts season.
"The band is full of music professors and instructors — all great musicians — and has five saxes, three trombones, three trumpets, a piano, a base, drums, a guitar and a vocalist to perform the great music of the '40s and the '50s," Julie Ashbrook, arts council administrator, said.
"Jim Gai, professor of music at UCMO, has performed for our arts council in two great shows, "The Road Kill Clarinet Quintet" and "The Jim Gai Trio" which did all our background music at our Christmas show last year," Ashbrook said. "When we told Jim we were looking for a big band, he said he had one that played at the university each year, and he thought he could get them to come to Chillicothe. The band agreed, and we are thrilled," Ashbrook said.
"This World War II era swing music has a broad appeal," Ashbrook said. "With such skilled musicians and such a large band, it is sure to be a great program. The audience can expect to hear songs such as 'In the Mood', 'Pennsylvania Six Five Thousand', "Moonlight Serenade", "April in Paris", 'Tuxedo Junction', 'I Can't Get Started', 'Satin Doll', and many other favorites," she said.
Tickets are $16 for adults and $7 for students. Tickets will be sold at the door beginning at 1:45 p.m., the day of the show. No advance tickets will be sold. Season ticket holders will be admitted with their season ticket. Seating begins at 2:30.
