The Salvation Army Red Kettle Drive officially kicked off its 2012 season Tuesday, with a goal of between $28,000 and $29,000 in collected donations.

Said Chillicothe Salvation Army Major Faye Flanagan, red kettles already have been set up across Chillicothe (at Hy-Vee and Piggly Wiggly), and in Trenton (at Hy-Vee and ShopCo). Flanagan said that the two Chillicothe Walmart kettles will not go up until the Friday after Thanksgiving this year (Nov. 23).

"Our kettle goal is between $28,000 and $29,000," Flanagan said, "[And] I think we're trying to at least hit a total goal of $72,000. That's including kettles and mail appeals.

"We made our Christmas goal last year, but donations were down throughout the year."

The red kettle drive will go through Monday, Dec. 24. Mail appeals will be accepted through mid-January 2013.

"We're currently looking for volunteers [to ring the bells by the kettles]," Flanagan said. Persons interested in doing so are asked to call the Chillicothe Salvation Army Office, at 646-3538, and tell the person answering the phone that they would like to donate their time to the drive. From there, times will be worked out so that all parties involved are satisfied, and volunteer services are used adequately.

Of note, the first donation of the season for the 2012 Red Kettle Drive was made on behalf of the offenders at Chillicothe Correctional Center, in the amount of $500. This was done during the Chillicothe Salvation Army's 125th anniversary celebration, held at their office, 621 W. Mohawk Rd., on Tuesday morning.
