  • Earl Richard "Bud" Osgood, 88, a resident of Shell Knob, Mo., died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012, in his home.
    He was born Jan. 9, 1924, in Hale, Mo., the son of James R. and Eliza H. (Woodard) Osgood. On Jan. 1, 1943, he was married to Ruth Mitchell, and to this union three children were born. On Jan. 17, 1975, he was united in marriage to Marcella I. "Marcie" (Walters) Lacey, who survives.
    Bud graduated from Avalon High School in 1941. He moved to Sterling, Ill., and worked in the steel mill and then lived in Kansas City, Mo. for a short time. During World War II, he entered the United States Army and was in the 12th Armored Division, serving from Nov. 3, 1942 until Feb. 24, 1944. For the next several years he resided in Kansas City and also Chillicothe, Mo., where he held various jobs. In 1951, he farmed near Hale and Avalon, Mo., and in 1959 he purchased a service station in Avalon, enlarging it to include farm service. Around 1963 he joined Modern Security Life in Springfield, Mo., eventually becoming Vice President, and then was Vice President in St. Louis. He later worked for Midwest National Life Insurance Company as Regional Manager in Columbia, Mo., and in 1970 took over the St. Louis Office. In the early 1970's Bud worked with his brother, Billy Lee, hauling food products from coast to coast. He eventually moved back to Avalon, Mo., remaining there until 1981, when he moved to the Branson, Mo. area, and later owned and operated Troy's Cafe in Galena, Mo. After moving to Shell Knob, Mo., he sold boats and cars, and fished.
    He was a member of Shell Knob First Christian Church, Shell Knob Lions Club, OES (Order of the Eastern Star) of Cassville, Masonic Lodge in Galena, and Hi Twelve in Shell Knob. Some of his favorite pastimes were hunting and fishing.
    Surviving are five children, Gerald "Jerry" Osgood and his wife, Susan, of Sunrise Beach, Mo., Gregory Osgood of Springfield, Mo., Debra Dee Ann (Osgood) Lewis and her husband, Tom, of Lee's Summit, Mo., Russ Murphy and his wife, Michelle, of Springfield, Mo., and Troy Lacey and his wife, Ann, of Springfield, Mo.; one sister, Lois Schwitters of Sterling, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
    Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Herbert Leroy Osgood and Billy Lee Osgood; and one sister, Elizabeth (Mills) Osgood.
    Memorial services were held Monday, Nov. 19, 2012, in Shell Knob First Christian Church, under direction of Fohn Funeral Home, Shell Knob. Pastor Tom Rees conducted services. Military honors were conducted by VFW Post #2203.
    Contributions may be made to LUC Boys Ranch, Shell Knob First Responders, Central Crossing Senior Center, Alliances of Churches, or Shell Knob Lions Club, in memory of Bud.
