Against a Moberly team which had graduated three all-district players from the squad which thumped a much-the-same Chillicothe club by 44 points 365 days earlier, the Chillicothe High School basketball Lady Hornets played from in front throughout the first 21 minutes Monday night, but could not open significant daylight. Then, after they did, a stunning turnaround left them dazed and confused – and beaten, 60-55.
After a strong close to the third quarter allowed the Lady Hornets to move from a 4-points lead to a 13-points advantage early in the fourth, Moberly's Lady Spartans scored 26 of the next 32 to overtake Chillicothe and spoil its home opener.
Samantha McKiddy led Chillicothe with a points-rebounds "double-double." She scored a team-high 16 points and had 12 rebounds. Madison Williams had 13 points, six boards, and four assists, Erin Gilliland eight assists and six points, and Maggie Graves 12 points and nine rebounds before fouling out with more than three minutes left.
Korina Cedillo led Moberly with 15 points – 13 in the last quarter when she went nine of 12 at the foul line.
The Lady Hornets (2-2) will have eight days to ponder the character-testing defeat before hosting Macon in a girls-boys home doubleheader Dec. 11
