  • Current Chillicothe R-2 Board of Education President David Meneely announced on Tuesday morning (Dec. 11) that he will not file for re-election to his seat during this political cycle, and will step down from the board after his term expires in April 2013.
"I don't intend to [file]," Meneely told the C-T Tuesday. "I've served for four years. I think there are plenty of others in the community who could do that job, so I'm going to step aside and let them do that."
Meneely's election to the board was unconventional to say the least, being selected via interview process and written ballot by the board, itself (instead of by customary popular vote, by the citizens of Chillicothe), in May of 2009, following the resignation of then-board member Eric Reeter, who vacated his position short of term in order to pursue employment within the district. Meneely was selected via a 5-0 decision by the board at that time, beating out former board member Rick Baker and school board candidate Robbie Skipper for the open spot. In a May 2009 interview with the C-T, Meneely said the main challenge facing the district could be summed up in three words: "Budget, budget, budget."
"We've reached some financial stability in the district, and that's why I ran in the first place," Meneely said Tuesday.
When taken to the public vote the following school year, Meneely was re-elected in resounding fashion in the April 2010 runoffs, receiving the most votes (1,621) of any school board candidate on the ballot, despite just slightly less than one year of prior board experience. This time, he was elected to a three-year term, along with Robin Westphal (who filed for re-election at 8:01 a.m. on Tuesday), and Randy Constant (who served the board on a one-year term).
After the 2010 election, Meneely was appointed to the position of R-2 board treasurer. In 2011, he was appointed Vice President under Paul Thomas' board, and in 2012, David Meneely was appointed R-2 board president.
Meneely is currently the Executive Director of the Livingston County Farm Service Agency in Chillicothe.
"I encourage everyone in the community who is interested in education to run for school board," he said.
