I find people are often in a rut with their food choices.  It is almost as if the only foods they know about are the foods they typically eat.

Although it is awkward to change any routine, it can be done.  It would be easier with the right mindset.  For example, just think about the fun that could be had in discovering a new favorite food that you would otherwise never come to experience.  Consider the importance of eating a wider variety of foods for the sake of interest if your appetite is dwindling.  Perhaps you just need to focus on the fact that not all foods deliver the same nutrients, and to eat a variety of foods would help ensure that you are eating a variety of nutrients.

Now, once upon a time, I knew someone who ate a variety of foods - it was a variety of cookies.  And that is not what I mean.  I mean, try a new food once a week or once a month.  Try jicama.  Add goat cheese to a salad.  Make a smoothie with kefir.  Kale chips - taste kale chips!  For those with a tightly locked comfort zone:  Use steel cut oats in place of quick rolled oats.  (It's a start.)

Got kids?  Sometimes that is the perfect excuse to have new foods to pull off a themed dinner night.  New family favorites can be a bit surprising.  What is snubbed can be surprising.  We usually develop some fun memories regardless.  One of our children went through a phase of desiring to drink from a pitcher.  I called that a bit medieval, and from that was developed medieval night where we all have turkey legs, corn on the cob, and kale chips - eating with our hands!  It seems the fun of eating it trumps the taste in a kids's world.  Building the best topped potato EVER, or creating the perfect combination of flavors on special bread for the sandwich everyone envies leading up to the climatic first bite - kids love these moments.  And as the meal planner/preparer, it serves as a creative outlet and a challenge to keep things interesting for me.

We have to eat so we may as well make it fun and interesting with variety.  Life is just to short to stay in a rut...another life lesson to be learned for kids.
