Memorial at school Saturday, Dec. 15
POLO — A memorial service for long-time Polo Panthers football coach and PHS educator Bob Shearer will be held at the school tomorrow (Saturday).
Shearer died Dec. 6, following a brief illness, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Kansas City, the C-T learned Wednesday.
One of the last proponents of the single-wing offense among high school football coaches, he led the Panthers for 35 years before retiring after the 2000 season.
The memorial service will begin 11 a.m. Saturday in the PHS gym, Newhart reports. Following it, "Taps" will be played for the World War II veteran and a "21-gun salute" fired from the 50-yard line of the adjacent Shearer Stadium PHS football field named for him.
"I told him that part of his responsibility with having a football stadium named after him was to maintain and mow the field! Coach Shearer would always respond, "Get me the sheep and I will get it done!," Polo superintendent Robert Newhart recalled in an e-mail circulated among area coaches and media, notifying them of Shearer's death.
