  • Chillicothe High School's varsity basketball teams came up empty over the weekend, dropping all three games they played.
After a lackluster performance Friday night in a 55-42 loss at St. Joseph: Bishop LeBlond in their Midland Empire Conference opener, CHS' Lady Hornets nearly upset Kirksville on the Lady Tigers' home floor less than 20 hours later.
Having led only once, at 4-2, the Lady Hornets came within a whisker of overcoming a 44-35 deficit in the final 2-1/2 minutes when they twice pulled within a point in the final 12 seconds. However, the second time, a missed free throw with just under two ticks of the clock remaining left them 47-46 losers.
Both Maggie Graves and Samantha McKiddy unofficially had double-doubles in points and rebounds for Chillicothe (6-5) Saturday after Grave scored 17 points in the previous night's loss. Graves scored 20 points with 10 rebounds against Kirksville (12-1), while McKiddy had 11 points and 10 boards and a strong defensive performance, according to head coach Rachael Parkey.
Also Saturday at Kirksville, the CHS boys lost to the Tigers, 52-42, when they were outscored 14-7 in the last 4-plus minutes.
The Hornets (5-8) got 11 points from Ryan Smith, 10 by Tyler Clampitt, and nine from Wade Dietz in the setback. Tyson Grgurich of KHS led all scorers with 18 points and Chris Tenpenny had 13.
The Lady Hornets meet host Kearney at 6:30 p.m. today (Jan. 7) in the opening round of the Bulldog Classic tournament. The Hornets will go to Maryville for Midland Empire Conference play tomorrow (Jan. 8), seeking to begin MEC play with back-to-back wins for the first time since the 2002-03 season. That's also the last time they won their league opener prior to defeating Bishop LeBlond at home last Thursday.
