The Storm Front Barbershop Quartet, the 2010 international gold medal winners of the Barbershop Harmony Society's international competition, will perform at 3 p.m. this Sunday, Jan. 20, at Gary Dickinson Performing Arts Center in Chillicothe. The program is part of the Chillicothe Area Arts Council's 2012-13 season.
"There are 25,000 members of the Barbershop Harmony Society, and if your quartet wins the international competition, that gold medal is forever and your quartet cannot enter the competition again," Julie Ashbrook, Chillicothe Area Arts Council administrator, explained.
"We think it is a real coup for us to have Storm Front in Chillicothe," she said. "Their quartet was brought to our attention by Marsha Leopard, our board president.
One of the quartet members, Syd Libsack, is a close friend of Leopard's son Nathan. In the early 2000s, Nathan and Syd were members of "Northwest Celebration Show Choir, a performance choir at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville.
"We know that connection helped us out," Ashbrook said. "The quartet members have to fly in from their homes around the country, so we are especially happy to have them here."
"It is a family show, and people of all ages will enjoy it—even children," Ashbrook said. "The show includes lots of humor as well as extraordinary musical talent.
