Chillicothe High wrestlers miss chance at new wins record in home finale
With a chance to make program history in front of the home crowd, the young Chillicothe High School wrestling Hornets found the visiting Lathrop Mules and Lawson Cardinals too tough last night.
Entering the home finale double-dual with 15 dual-match triumphs on the season – equaling the program's high-water mark reached twice prior to this season, the 2012-13 Hornets instead took it on the chin, falling to Lawson 43-33 and then Lathrop 43-25.
As a result, this year's Hornets will need to win at least once in their regular-season finale duals against Centralia and host Marceline on Monday. They'll go into that action with a 15-10 mark.
Only two Hornets – not surprisingly, their pair of newly-minted Midland Empire Conference champions – came off the mat victorious both times last night.
Freshman 132-pounder Aaron Baker decisioned Lawson Cardinal Josh Sutphin 8-3, using three takedowns and a reversal to rack up his points, and then pinned Cody Kistner of Lathrop's Mules in 3:22 to get Chillicothe off on a winning note in that match.
Thaddeus Rinehart, CHS' junior 126-pounder, began the competition against Lawson in similar triumphant fashion, sticking Logan Dietz in 2:44. He followed that with a tense 1-0 decision over Lathrop's Dawson Beane, scoring the bout's only point with a second-period escape, in the final action of that dual.
