  • An Independence man was taken into custody by a Livingston County sheriff's deputy as part of an investigation that began Friday, Feb. 1, at about 10:21 a.m., of felony assault with a weapon, kidnapping, and endangering the welfare of a child.
The incident allegedly began in Carroll County, and crossed over into Livingston County. Christopher Ryan Carpenter, 37, Independence, was taken into custody by the Livingston County Sheriff's Department, after being found by deputies in a vehicle.
A female passenger was taken to Hedrick Medical Center, where she was treated for a stab wound, and a juvenile was taken into protective custody, but was physically unharmed.
Carroll County Sheriff's Department alleges the suspect vehicle and driver had been traveling at speeds of about 100 mph. The male suspect was allegedly threatening to hit oncoming traffic, physically assaulting the adult female in the car, and subsequently stabbing her in the upper leg area, resulting in serious injury. The suspect also allegedly made threats of murdering the woman, the juvenile, and another family member, and was in possession of illegal drug(s) and drug paraphernalia.
Carpenter was arrested by Livingston County for alleged kidnapping, endangering the welfare of a child, and DWI under drugs. He was released to the Carroll County Sheriff's Department for their formal charges, as the alleged stabbing and other crimes took place in Carroll County.
Carpenter remains in the custody of the Carroll County Sheriff, and a report is being submitted to Livingston County Prosecuting Attorney Adam Warren for consideration of formal criminal charges being filed in Livingston County.
"The members of the Carroll and Livingston County sheriffs' offices did an excellent job in working together to resolve this multi-county crime scene and incident," said Livingston County Sheriff Steve Cox.
