Estimated $200,000 needed to renovate building
The Livingston County Community Foundation has announced a $5,000 grant to the North Missouri Center for Youth and Families to be used in remodeling the facility at the former Savage Grocery building at 211 Locust, in Chillicothe.
The mission of the NMCYF is to serve and strengthen the families of North Missouri by empowering youth to reach their full potential. Currently, the organization is offering their PowerUp! After School program in the basement of the House of Prayer, with a total of 23 students, all of whom are eligible for free or reduced lunch. The group is offering a healthy meal for each child, homework assistance, character building lessons, cooking, and gardening experiences and positive encouragement.
When they move to the new location this spring, in addition to greatly expanded PowerUp! After School program, they intend to offer a space for those involved in custody sharing to hold supervised court-ordered family visits, family education workshops and programs, adult computer access and training, assistance in job searches, and rentable space for community groups and private functions.
The floor plans for the new facility include a kitchen, computer lab, multi-room/dining area, program/game table space, study/tutoring rooms, and a teen specific space. Executive Director Daniel Savage has estimated a total of $200,000 needed to renovate and equip the facility and $133,500 for start-up capital, which includes salaries, supplies, rent, utilities, and purchased services. The $5,000 grant from the foundation is from the Permanent Endowment account of the LCCF. The Livingston County Community Foundation was organized in January of 1998, with the purpose of enhancing the quality of life of citizens of Livingston County through the generation and management of endowments, and the awarding of grants to non-profit, tax-exempt organizations in the county. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded 55 grants, totaling over $272,000.
