  • EXCELSIOR SPRINGS — Chillicothe High School Hornets wrestlers – Kyler Sewell, Luke Plummer, and Aaron Baker – hit the sack Friday night one district-tournament victory away from qualifying for next week's Class 2 state championships.
Each had advanced to Saturday's District 4 tournament championship semifinals after recording a pair of wins Friday. As a result, victories in either their first or second bouts Saturday would assure them of a top-4 finish at district and advancement to state.
Sewell, a state medalist (fifth place at 113 pounds) last year, had a first-round bye as the No. 2 seed at 120 pounds Friday. The CHS sophomore (35-9) then decisioned Mason Bake of Odessa 5-2 to advance to a semifinal clash against freshman Justin Gans (30-9) of Cameron.
Plummer followed his 195-pounds opening-round bye with a 2:42 pin of John Teague of Kansas City: Center.
The Chllicothe 10th grader (25-11) will go against top seed Jacob Bohlken (37-10), a Smithville freshman, in his first bout Saturday.
At 132 pounds, Hornets freshman Aaron Baker didn't have the cushion of a first-round bye, so he won twice on the mat Friday.
    A. Baker (33-6) won by fall over Benjamin Monachino of Kansas City: St. Pius X in 1:42, then pinned St. Joseph: Benton's Matt Garza in the third period at 4:47.
He'll open Saturday action facing a foe from the host school, A.J. Edwards (20-26), an Excelsior Springs junior.
Two other Chillicothe wrestlers ended Friday's action two wins away from state – junior Thaddeus Rinehart at 126 pounds and frosh Vinson Moore at 220.
The Hornets' other eight competitors – like Rinehart and Moore already in the consolation wrestle backs – face even-longer odds of scrambling back to get a top-4 finish. Each of them needs to win his first three bouts in the second day of the 2-day event to gain state qualification.
