  • The Chillicothe R-2 Board of Education will be holding a special public meeting on Tuesday night (Feb. 12), beginning at 6:30 p.m., at the district headquarters along Old Hwy. 36, for the purpose of discussing the district's long-range plan for facilities.
"It's really just a work session," clarified Chillicothe R-2 Superintendent Dr. Roger Barnes on Monday morning. "We're trying to decide whether there is a need for any [district] construction in the future; what an advisory committee [regarding long-term facility plans] would discuss; if a new building is built, would it be built in town, or near the high school; do we repair and restore, or phase [older buildings] out for something more technology-friendly.
"It's nothing we can just do right away, in terms of funding and financing," Barnes said, of facility construction within the district. He noted, rather, that on Tuesday night, he just wanted to "get the ball rolling" on discussions putting a plan into place for the future of R-2's buildings. He said that the meeting is purely discussion-based. No action is slated to take place.
After the district's most recent bond refinancing, it was determined that if R-2 could "maintain [their] debt service levy, [they] might be able to come about with another building." This would be via a new building bond issue with no tax increase, said Barnes.
"That would be our hope, if that is what we would lead to," Barnes said.
