Good luck to the eight outstanding athletes who will be representing Kirksville High School at the state wrestling tournament which begins on Thursday in Columbia.  Each one of them has battled adversity at some point this season and have made many sacrifices to get to where they are today.  Being a former wrestler I know that by this time of year the nagging aches and pains of a grueling season have begun to pile up and my respect and admiration for each one of these eight young men is great.  I see no reason why KHS could not bring home another state title.

The KHS boys and girls basketball teams were both in action on Tuesday night with the boys losing a tough one at home while the girls defeated Fulton on the road by twenty points.  The girls have their final regular season game on Thursday night which will also be senior night and obviously the last home game of the year against Marshall.  A victory on Thursday night will give the Lady Tigers an undefeated record in conference play and obviously they will be the top seed in the districts which begin on February 25.  The boys finish their regular season at Marshall on Friday.

Both Truman State basketball teams try to get back on the winning track on Thursday as they have home games against Southwest Baptist.  The women are trying to shake their first two game losing streak of the season while the men have come so close to winning so many times I have lost count.

The Missouri Tigers men’s basketball team heads to Mississippi State on Wednesday for a matchup with them before heading to Arkansas on Saturday.  The Tigers are still in search of their first road victory in the SEC and they need to get it quickly because things get a little tougher from here on out.

The Great Lakes Valley conference which is the conference Truman State will be joining starting this fall announced earlier this week they would be adding men’s and women’s swimming as a conference sport starting next year.  This is obviously good news for Truman as they have had swimming teams for many years.  It leaves wrestling as the only sport that Truman offers that the GLVC doesn’t sponsor.  Every time I see press releases like that one or read about the Great Lakes Valley conference I get more and more excited.  The move to the GLVC will be so much better for Truman on so many levels.

After starting out strongly the St. Louis Blues have hit some rough ice as of late as they are still playing well offensively but struggle defensively and are losing high schoring shootouts that you simply can’t lose in the western conference which seems to be where the highest scoring teams are.  It also seems to be the conference with the least amount of defense but the team that scores the most goals wins and the Blues are giving up more than they are scoring right now.

A couple of days ago while I was wishing I had a fasnatch to celebrate National Fasnatch Day which apparently is not observed in these parts I decided to check out the standings in the NBA and was interested to see that the Oklahoma City Thunder do not have the best record in the NBA any more.  That distinction belongs to the San Antonio Spurs who seem to end every season with the best record only to lose in the second round of the playoffs.  The Thunder are right there with the Spurs and as far as I’m concerned are the best team in the NBA and my pick to win the whole thing but obviously the standings don’t show that.  The Eastern conference is being dominated by the Miami Heat right now as LeBron James is playing at a level right now which is truly remarkable.  I’m not his biggest fan but you can’t overlook what he has done this year and the offensive numbers he has put up.

We’ll be back on Friday with a look ahead to this weekend’s sports action as well as a look back at the basketball action for the remainder of this week.  I’m sure I will still be craving a fasnatch which probably doesn’t taste any better than a doughnut but what would you rather eat: a fasnatch or a doughnut?  Fasnatch even sounds like it would be better for you.  The word doughnut just sounds like it isn’t good for you.  For more information on what a fasnatch is please contact the editor of this newspaper as it’s all his wife’s fault that I want one.  Anyway, thanks as always for reading and supporting this blog and please do the same for the other blogs on this site.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!
