Green City semifinals, finals shifted; finals at Braymer now Saturday afternoon; Hamilton girls to play Saturday; no word from Norborne yet

The snowstorm which plowed through the midwest Thursday prevented virtually any play in Missouri high school basketball that night, including the district tournaments which are underway in classes 1-3.

Among those tournaments involving teams in the C-T coverage area, two tournaments plan to resume Friday (tonight), one will postpone Friday's title games to Saturday afternoon, no word had been received as of 11:30 a.m. on the fate of the fourth's Friday night finals.

Darren Smith, Meadville High athletics director and boys' basketball head coach, confirmed late Friday morning that the Class 1 District 11 tournament semifinals at Green City which were postponed Thursday are rescheduled to be played tonight (Friday) on the following time schedule:

4:30 p.m. – (girls) Green City vs Linn County
5:45 – (boys) Linn County vs Newtown Harris
7:00 – (girls) Meadville vs Gilman City
8:15 – (boys) Meadville vs Grundy County

The tourney's championship games remain on their original Saturday timetable – girls at 5 p.m. and boys at 6:30 p.m.

The winners of that tournament will be in Chillicothe for first-round state play on Tuesday – the boys' game at 6 p.m. and girls' at 7:45. The opponents will be the District 12 (Norborne) champions.

The winners of Tuesday's games in Chillicothe move on to quarterfinal play at Truman State University in Kirksville next Saturday.

In Class 1 District 13 at Braymer, the championship contests scheduled for Friday have been shifted to Saturday, tournament manager Joe Mallory of BHS reports.

The girls' title game between Wellington-Napoleon and Orrick will tip off at 1 p.m. Saturday with the Hardin-Central vs. Wellington-Napoleon boys' championship game at 2:30 p.m.

As of the time of this posting, no change in the plans for the Class 1 District 12 tournament Norborne is hosting had been received, suggesting Friday night's championship games still were on.

The schedule there is for the girls' title game between Norborne and Tina-Avalon to begin at 6 p.m., followed by the Hale-Mendon: Northwestern boys' game at about 7:30 p.m.

The most-complicated situation is the Class 3 District 16 tournament at St. Joseph, being hosted by Bishop LeBlond High.

There, the boys' semifinals were postponed Thursday and, at last report, there was a question whether they'd be able to be played Friday.

If the boys' semifinal are played Friday, both championship games would be played Saturday, beginning with the Hamilton girls facing Cameron at 2 p.m. and the boys' game to follow, tournament manager Greg Kastner of BLHS announced.

If there is no play Friday, the boys' semifinals will be played Saturday afternoon followed by the girl' championship game at 6 p.m. The boys' title game then would be played Monday, weather permitting.

The Class 1 districts have a smaller window of time to get their districts wrapped up as first-round play in the Class 1 state tournaments is due to be Tuesday night. In Class 3 (as well as Class 2), first-round state games don't happen until next Wednesday.
