I just watched on the news the pope's farewell speech. How amazing to see thousands of people in such a beautiful setting. It is truly remarkable to see so many believers gathered in one place from all over the world.
Do I believe the pope made a good decision? Absolutely! We all know he could have sat back as pope and slid through the rest of his life doing the best he could. Traditionally, everyone would expect that. But Pope Benedict chose a much harder path. To resign took courage and above all faith, knowing the church would successfully move forward. His farewell speech, the little I was honored to watch, was a graceful and prayerful ending. He seemed sure of his decision and sure we Catholics, as always, will survive this and any other storm we encounter. The church can and will withstand change, and Pope Benedict is an obvious supporter in change when it is for the good of the church and its followers!
