  • The Friends of the Livingston County Library invites our community to join in a unique new program: One Read Livingston County. One Community. One Book.
The goal of the 'One Read' program is to encourage community members to have a shared experience through reading one classic piece of literature at the same time. A broader goal is to foster and promote reading in general.
"We are pleased to announce To Kill a Mockingbird as our book selection for our One Read Livingston County program this year," stated Friends of the Library President Kris Daniel. "This timeless classic is not only a title that is a favorite of many people; there are so many social aspects to the book that we feel it will generate some great discussions."
To Kill a Mockingbird, is a Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Harper Lee, that in a recent survey by the Library of Congress Center for the Book, was named as second to the Bible as a book that are most often cited as "making a difference." Published in 1960, Lee based the book loosely on her observations of her family and neighbors when she was 10 years old and living in the South. It has been described as a book that deals with serious racial and social issues with "warmth and humor."
"To Kill a Mockingbird is the most common selection for a community 'One Read' program and I'm thrilled that the Friends' choose this is as their initial selection," stated Library Director Robin Westphal.
The program officially kicks off on March 10 at 2 p.m. at the Livingston County Courthouse with the annual Friends of the Livingston County Library Membership Drive. All those who join the group will receive a free copy of this year's title. More exciting activities are planned throughout March and April, including a showing of the movie at the Grand Six Theater.
"We hope that everybody in the community will consider taking part in this event," said Friends of the Library President Kris Daniel. "Without giving too much away, I will say, the kickoff event is going to feature an unforgettable presentation that really brings our book selection to life and features local community members. I wouldn't miss it."
The inaugural book selection was selected by members of the Friends of the Library Board and One Read Committee. If you would like to become a member of the Friends of the Library, stop by the Livingston County Library for a membership form or call Robin at 660-646-0547.
