The Chillicothe Fire Department will host a Severe Weather Spotter Class at the beginning of March.

The event will take place on Tuesday, March 5, beginning at 6 p.m., in the Family Life Center at Chillicothe Calvary Baptist Church, 206 Locust.

Tom Wachs will be the speaker at this year's class.

Wachs is the weekend evening meteorologist on KCTV5. Per the KCTV5 website, he joined the KCTV5 StormTrack5 weather team in June 2008. His profile goes on to give the following information:

"Prior to joining KCTV5 News, Tom held a similar position in Johnson City, Tenn., and before that was chief meteorologist for KNOP-TV in North Platte, Neb.

"One of the many highlights of Tom's career includes providing the first ever wall-to-wall severe weather coverage in KNOP-TV's history.

"Tom was one of the first 200 people in the country to receive the 'Certified Broadcast Meteorologist' designation from the American Meteorological Society.

"Tom is a native of Milwaukee, Wis., and a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences. In his free time, Tom likes to swim, travel and storm chase. His favorite food is sushi. His favorite musical artist is James Taylor, and his favorite movie is 'Twister.'

"Tom's favorite thing about Kansas City is that it's a big city with a small town community feel."

The class is free and open to the public. No RSVP is needed.
