Fern Lucile Clifton, loving wife, devoted mother and compassionate grandmother left the embrace of her family here on earth for the perfect embrace of her Father in Heaven on February 25, 2013 at her home in Independence, MO surrounded by her husband and children.
Fern Harris was born August 9, 1924 in Trenton, Missouri to Andrew Everett and Mary Gladys Harris. She spent her childhood years in Trenton, Mo. She committed her life to Christ as a young girl and was converted by the grace of God. She was baptized in a creek beside Shelburne Baptist church near Trenton. After graduation from Trenton High School, Fern and her identical twin sister Frances attended Southwest Baptist College in Bolivar, Mo. Fern and Frances were well known in north Missouri as they sang for many churches and revival meetings. In 1948 Fern married the love of her life, Rev. Harry W. Clifton of Spickard, MO. At the time Harry was pastor of the First Baptist Church of Spickard. Over the course of the next 50 years Harry pastored First Baptist Spickard, MO, First Baptist Princeton, MO, Calvary Baptist Chillicothe, MO, Immanuel Baptist of Independence, MO and Emmanuel Baptist in Topeka, KS. Through all these pastorates Fern was a tremendous help to her husband. For most of those years she served faithfully with the preschool children and provided caring ministry to all in need. She also took great care of her family and her husband, finding great joy in cooking and the ministry of creating and maintaining a joyful home. She loved to provide hospitality to everyone who came to her home. She loved being a wife and mother but she seems to have had a special joy and exuberance for being a granny. She loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren and found joy in each of them. She was a woman of great faith and prayer who daily prayed for her husband, her siblings and all of her children, grandchildren and family. She will be greatly missed by her family and the many people whose lives were changed by knowing her.
