The Chillicothe R-2 School District has extended the 2012-13 school year due to the recent snow storms that kept students and staff from classrooms for almost the entirety of last week.

The current school year will now end on Thursday, May 30, 2013, said R-2 Superintendent Dr. Roger Barnes on Monday afternoon (March 4). On Tuesday (March 5), Barnes met with building administrators across the Chillicothe R-2 School District to discuss the possible date for an additional make-up day within that timeframe, to account for one of the days lost during the year. The days chosen between were March 15, March 29 (Good Friday), and April 1 (the Monday after Easter).

"We still have another day to make up, yet, [on top of the school year extension,]" Barnes explained. "We've missed a total of eight days. We build up six days in our calendar [for snow days. Our options are to] either take one of those three days, or go [to school] on a Saturday."

Barnes went on to explain that per regulations regarding school cancellations, every even-numered day after seven missed school days is forgiven, and does not need to be made up by the district. (For example, the eighth, tenth, twelfth, etc., days missed do not need to be made up.) All odd days after that must be made up, until 14 days of school are missed. No days after 14 missed (including said fourteenth day) have to be made up during that school year.

March 15 was chosen as said make-up date, Barnes announced late Tuesday morning. No Saturday make-up dates are required of the district at this juncture.

"That [date is] pending Board [of Education] approval," Barnes said. "We look to have that later this week."

Barnes said the board will be meeting in a special session later this week to accept the calendar amendment. Said meeting has yet to be set.

Per Barnes, the extension of the current school year is set to end just prior to the start of the 2013 summer school -- on May 31.

"Summer school starts the very next day," Barnes confirmed. "We run a 24-day summer school session. That [day total is] set by Edison Learning, the company we do our summer school with.

"[Due to that, summer school's end is] backed up right now into July 3."

The district is trying to avoid letting summer school run into the Fourth of July holiday as much as possible.

Originally, the last day of classes for the 2012-13 Chillicothe R-2 school year was set for May 23, 2013.

Due to last week's winter storm, buildings districtwide were closed, and classes cancelled, from Tuesday (Feb. 26) through Friday (March 1).
