This Sunday at 3 p.m., at the Gary Dickinson Performing Arts Center, the Chillicothe Area Arts Council presents the off Broadway smash hit "The Marvelous Wonderettes", a musical comedy featuring over 30 songs from the 1950s and 1960s.
"We are really happy to be welcoming the Springer Opera House touring group to Chillicothe once again," arts council administrator Julie Ashbrook said. "They brought us a Patsy Cline show a couple of years ago, and it was outstanding. This show, "The Marvelous Wonderettes," has been an audience favorite everywhere it's been performed. It's a trip down memory lane for many of us, and just the setting, alone, is a hoot for folks of all ages," Ashbrook said.
The show opens at the 1958 Springfield High prom. A huge mishap has occurred: the entertainment for the evening has failed to show. Four high school girls are encouraged to take the stage in place of the professional entertainment. The girls, in their full crinoline formals, begin to belt out the great jukebox songs of the 1950s and 1960s, all in wonderful harmony. Through songs like "Mr. Sandman", "Lipstick on His Collar" and "Heatwave", the audience learns about the lives and loves of these four young women.
In act two, the show fast forwards to the 10th high school class reunion where, once again, the crowd clamors for the four to sing. Enter the great music hits of the 1960s like "You Don't Own Me", "Rescue Me", "It's My Party" and many more.
"It's been a long winter," Ashbrook said. "This show is a great place to kiss winter good bye and enjoy some great music and some wonderful laughs!"
The box office opens at 2 p.m. Tickets are $18 for adults and $7 for students.
Season ticket holders will be admitted with their season tickets.
