The entry deadline for the "North Missourians at Work and Play" photo contest sponsored by the Chillicothe Area Arts Council is 5 p.m., Thursday, April 18. Contest rules and entry forms are available at the Chillicothe Area Chamber of Commerce office, 514 Washington Street, or by e-mailing the arts office at arts@chillicothemo. com

The juried contest includes three divisions: youth (18 and under); adult professional (earns money through photography); and adult amateur. Monetary prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place in each division. A$5 entry fee will be charged for each photo entered.

The fee is waived for those in the youth division.

This year the professionally judged photo contest will feature photos of people at work and play within a 50-mile radius of Chillicothe, according to Julie Ashbrook, administrator for the arts council. "This year's contest will focus on north Missouri people in their daily lives—at school, in the car, on the job, in the garden, hunting or fishing, peeling potatoes, washing dishes, sitting in the church pews, feeding the chickens, shopping at the grocery, etc.—doing the things that are part of our daily lives. All photos must include at least one person," Ashbrook said.

Entries will be judged on creativity, technical ability and aesthetic value. The photos may be taken with any sort of camera, including a phone. The photos must have been taken between April 2012 and April 18, 2013, Ashbrook said.

"We had a wonderful response to our photo contest two years ago, and we are hoping for the same again this year," Ashbrook said. "After our last contest, the judge, who was very impressed with all of the fine photos, suggested that we limit the number of entries from each person to four photos, and that we stipulate that the photos be taken within the last year. That way, the judge explained, the photographers would be doing some of their own editing by selecting their best photos, and would be thinking about their subject matter for the contest rather than selecting from photos on hand," Ashbrook said. "The judge said that was a teaching technique for those interested in photography," she said.

A two week exhibit of all entries will be held from May 9 to May 22 in the Old Courtroom of the Livingston County Library, 450 Locust Street in Chillicothe. The exhibit will be open to the public at no charge.

Rules and entry forms are available at the Chillicothe Area Chamber of Commerce office or by e-mailing the arts office at or by calling the arts office at 660-646-1173.
