  • The name of the 92-year-old woman killed in Sunday night's crime spree has been released.
Carmelita L. Kaser lived at 401 Morehead St., Moberly.
Per the Moberly Police Department, the initial results of Kaser's autopsy, performed on Tuesday, April 2, at the Boone County Medical Examiner's office, indicate that the victim died of an apparent stab wound.
Jeffrey Jay Nichols, 22, and Christopher Demond Lewis III, 18, have been charged with first degree murder in Kaser's death. Both are from Macon, Mo., and both are being held on $1 million bond.
It is suspected that the duo killed Kaser prior to stealing her vehicle, which they later abandoned and burned on Randolph County Road 2515. Police found Kaser dead in her home while attempting to contact the owner of the vehicle. They discovered her homestead to be "unsecure."
Kaser's daughter, Moberly resident Phyllis Self, described her mother as "one of a kind" — "a very active 92-year-old," who "still drove to church and the grocery store."
"She was a wonderful Christian lady," Self said. "She had many friends, of many ages.
"She particularly loved children. She took great joy in her children, her grandchildren, and her great grandchildren. She was ready to die. She was looking forward to it. When we asked her to go to events with us, she'd always say 'You never know when it might be your last.' She shouldn't have died this way. This is not a way anyone should die."
Nichols and Lewis are currently being held separately, at the Randolph and Chariton County jailing facilities, awaiting arraignment.
