  • The quarterly meeting of the Grand River Historical Society will be at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9, at the Elks Lodge in Chillicothe. The meeting is open to the public. The guest speaker will be Dr. Frank Nickell, who will present a program entitled: “It is Very Plain: Missourians are Funny People,” a presentation about the character and nature of Missourians. His premise is that although life can be difficult in the Show-Me State, Missourians have a history of laughing a lot, often at themselves. Nickell is known throughout the Midwest for his humorous programs. He has been a professor at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau with 43 years on the job as history professor, department chairman, bursar of the university, and has served as director of the center for regional history at Southeast State for 23 years. He retired at the first of the year and was appointed director of the State Historical Society Research Center in Cape Girardeau. The menu for dinner will be lasagna with vegetables, dessert and drink, catered by Jeff Clemons. The cost for the evening will be $10. Contact the Museum at 646-1341 or Ron Wilder at 646-0502 to make reservations.
