The Civil War begins
Although President Lincoln had promised not to invade any of the states in the Confederacy "under any pretext," he sent supplies to Fort Sumter anyway. Suspecting a trick, South Carolina attacked Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, and accepted their surrender on April 13. This was the opening battle of the American Civil War.
