  • (April 16, 2013 ) » One day after posting their first non-shutout 2013 match victory, the tennis Hornets of Chillicothe High School returned to their former ways Tuesday.
For the fifth time in six outings this spring, the senior-laden Hornets hung up another doughnut, blanking the visiting Trenton Bulldogs 9-0 on a cool, overcast afternoon and evening at the Daryl Danner Memorial Park courts.
The triumph lifted Chillicothe's season record to a perfect 6-0. It has won 54 of 57 sets in varsity play thus far.
Although the sets-score spread was as wide as could be, beneath the surface, the competition was more heated, certainly more than the temperature. Nearly half of the sets saw the Trenton singles player or doubles team win at least four games.
The closest of those was in No. 2 singles where the revolving middle of the Hornets' singles lineup saw senior Chase Reeter back there. He had to battle right to the last point before subduing Nathanyl Bankson 8-6.
Two other singles sets were more-than-reasonably competitive, including the top one.
At No. 1 singles, Chillicothe senior Wade Dietz outlasted THS' Isaiah Swann 8-4, the same score by which CHS senior Jeremiah Applebury took down Wilson Utley in No. 6 spot.
The remainder of the singles play was lopsided, favoring the Hornets. At No. 3, sophomore Gabe Poling waxed Samuel Muff 8-1, while at Nos. 4 and 5, 12th graders Grant Peterson and Johnson Young of Chillicothe whipped Brandon Whittle and Jacob Marlay, respectively, by 8-0 margins.
The No. 2 doubles action fell into the well-contested category with the Gr. Peterson/Young tandem pushed hard before securing an 8-5 triumph over the Swann/Whittle duo.
In No. 1 doubles, Dietz and Reeter won over Bankson/Muff 8-2 and Applebury/Poling rolled past Marlay/Utley 8-1 in the No. 3 doubles.
The next scheduled action, weather permitting, for the varsity tennis Hornets is a Thursday Midland Empire Conference dual match at Savannah.
