  • The Chillicothe R-2 Board of Education voted Tuesday to bring Missouri University Fellows into the district for the 2013-2014 school year.
MU Fellows is part of the MU Partnership for Educational Renewal, of which Chillicothe R-2 is a founding member. The district's involvement  in the program will bring two MU graduates to Chillicothe to serve as first-year teachers while they work toward their master’s degree in education. R-2 Superintendent Roger Barnes believes the program is equally beneficial for the school and the student.
“It certainly helps us fill a teaching need,” Barnes said. “It also helps prepare young teachers to become stronger professionals.”
In order for a district to be considered for the MU Fellows Program, there must be a natural opening for the position.
“The natural opening exists when you have someone that retires or someone leaves the district,” Barnes said.
Next year, the district will welcome two MU Fellows into its schools. Barnes said this is the norm when a district opts to participate in the program.
“You will pull a teacher who's already in the classroom out, creating a second opening," Barnes explained. "Both of those MU Fellows will go into those two openings. The teacher who is pulled out will remain on staff, but they are primarily the mentor for those two.”
While the MU Fellows will be in Chillicothe to learn the skills of the job and gain real-world experience, Barnes believes much can be learned from these new teachers, as well.
“As I see it, they come with the latest information, technology and strategies,”  Barnes said. “They are also filled with professional development. Most times, they are able to expand our own professional development here from the information they’ve pulled from the University and brought to us. They are definitely considered a high quality teacher.”
