  • Baseball Hornets Can't Cash In Toedebusch Gem

  • It's a measure of the weather-related frustrations of the Chillicothe High School baseball Hornets' 2013 season that when, more than a month into their schedule, they had only their second chance to play on their home field Saturday, a "walk-off" finish wasn't a cause for joy.
Following cancellation of the weekend's slated 8-team Chillicothe Invitational Tournament because Friday's rainouts made completion of the tourney impossible, the Hornets accessed the unexpected vacancy to make up one of their many previous postponement, albeit one they were supposed to play on the road.
Instead, Cameron's Dragons came to Chillicothe's "June" Shaffer Memorial Stadium to "host" the Hornets in Midland Empire Conference action.
As if the frustration with trying to get games in – especially those at home – wasn't already enough, Saturday's play produced even more regret as Chillicothe inability to make the play on a shallow fly ball with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning resulted in Cameron taking a 2-1 "walkoff" victory on Chillicothe turf in a game in which Hornets senior pitcher Troy Toedebusch threw a complete-game 3-hitter and struck out 12 while allowing only two walks.
Chillicothe's baseball Hornets will attempt to make up another rainout today (April 29). They are scheduled to host Macon in a 5 p.m. varsity/junior-varsity doubleheader at Shaffer Park.
They're due to travel to Maryville tomorrow.
    Tennis Hornets postponed to today
Friday's rescheduled Chillicothe High School Hornets tennis match at Savannah was rained out again.
It will be made up today as a varsity-only 5 p.m. match, according to Dan Nagel, CHS athletics director.
