This Saturday starts the fifth year of Market Basket Giveaways at the Chillicothe Farmers Market.
This event is held on the last Saturday of every month the market is open, May through October. Every producer attending market that day will donate an item from their offering to create a bountiful basket of in-season produce, baked goods and more from the market. A dozen or more producers are currently offering in season produce including leaf lettuce, kale, radishes, spinach, green onions, rhubarb and asparagus. A large variety of baked goods, honey products and jams/jellies plus fresh eggs, frozen meats, greenhouse and nursery plants and assorted crafts are also available this spring. Customers can sign up to win the bounty only during the market, but do not need to be present at 10 a.m. for the drawing.
Also, this Saturday, the Livingston County Health Center will host a Kids Gardening Activity Center during market hours. Health Center staff will be set up on the center bricks where they will have supplies for children to make “butterfly bombs” (a compacted ball of soil and seeds to creat a butterfly garden) and to paint garden markers. The activity is part of the Health Center’s “Living Fresh — A Way of Life” program promoting healthier food and activity choices.
Special activities will ramp up during June which is National Fresh Fruits and Vegetables month. The market will soon announce details about its annual canner testing day (June 8) in partnership with MU Extension, and a fun event in the planning stages at the Sliced Bread Jam (June 15).
“Stop by, check out the offerings and activities and don’t forget to sign up for your chance to win “Fresh from Your Neighbors” this Saturday starting at 8 a.m. on the west-side courthouse square, downtown Chillicothe,” said Market Master Beth Weidner.
