Chillicothe's junior American Legion baseball team rallied to extend its winning streak to eight games Wednesday, completing a home doubleheader sweep from St. Joseph with a 5-4 come-from-behind, walkoff victory in the finale.
Down 3-0 after 2-1⁄2 innings against a club they had defeated three times in as many meetings this summer, the Cardinals tied the second game 3-3 in the bottom of the third and took a 4-3 lead with a run in the fifth.
St. Joseph kept the game going with a marker in the top of the sixth, but Chillicothe provided a dramatic finish that pleased the home fans.
Derek Hussey's third single of the game led off the final half-inning. He stole second and went to third as lefthanded-hitting Austin Minnick efficiently pulled a ground ball to the first baseman for the first out.
Following a walk to Kyler Sewell, Shayler Keller delivered the walkoff win, looping a pop fly out of the reach of the second baseman for his second hit of the game as Hussey scored to end it.
The Cardinals had taken the 7-innings opener of the twinbill at the Daryl Danner Memorial Park "green" field, 5-2, behind the complete-game pitching of Gunnar Leach.
Now 16-8 on the year, Chillicothe's junior (AA division) Legion baseball team are slated to play another pair tonight (June 27), weather permitting. It is scheduled to be at Macon at 6 p.m.
