The Chillicothe R-2 Board of Education approved a $19.4 million district budget for the 2013-14 school year during a special meeting last Thursday, June 27.
With an increase in the total budget from the previous school year comes an increase in the percentage alloted for reserves. The amount alloted for reserves during the 2013-14 school year will be 25.22 percent, up from 20.69 percent last year.
The board also considered and approved a bid by Black Top Paving Maintenance, Inc., out of Kansas City, for a number of pavement improvements. These improvements come at a cost of approximately $48,000 and include the west side of the field house and field playground, as well as patch jobs in various locations across the district. Black Top Paving Maintenance, Inc., is the same company that completed asphalting improvements at the high school parking lot and Chilli Bay Water Park.
The asphalt improvement project is just one of many capital improvement projects the district has planned during the next year. Total capital improvement costs are estimated at $215,000. This includes the asphalting project, security cameras at Grand River Technical School, loading dock reconstruction at the high school, gutter and down spout repair at Dewey and Central Elementary Schools, handicap ramp construction at Dewey and tiling at the Middle School. The board is also looking to bid out a shed for storage of equipment at the new athletic complex.
During the meeting's executive session, the board approved the hiring of two cheerleading sponsors, Andrea Beck and Jeanne Lair.
