July 9, 1790

Residence Act of 1790

The national capital had been in Philadelphia, Annapolis, New York City, and other cities, but on July 9, 1790, the House of Representatives followed the Senate and voted for the new capital to be located on the Potomac. President Washington signed the Residence Act of 1790 on July 16.
